MAUI ACADEMY OF PERFORMING ARTS BLACK BOX THEATER

The Naylor Black Box Theater is the first phase of a planned broader performing arts campus in downtown Wailuku, HI for the Maui Academy of Performing Arts. Navigating complex stakeholder needs and challenging economic constraints following the 2020 Pandemic and 2023 wildfires, the design took a distilled, highly flexible, multi-functional approach. The building weaves together educational and performance programming: a fully equipped black box theater with dance and rehearsal studios, a student lounge, and flexible support spaces, emphasizing multi-use spaces and scenarios that transition effortlessly throughout the day to engage as many segments of the community as possible.
