LAKESIDE RETREAT, MODESTLY ELEVATED
Putnam Valley, NY
This lakeside retreat in Putnam Valley began as a Sears catalog kit home — one of thousands of modest, pre-designed structures built in the early twentieth century as affordable seasonal escapes. Its privileged position at the water’s edge, now protected by zoning, made the existing footprint sacred; every decision had to work within it. Rather than treat this as a limitation, the project embraces constraint as a catalyst — rethinking the plan from the inside out to meet contemporary standards of comfort, performance, and light. Large skylights and folding glass doors dissolve the boundary between interior and landscape, drawing the lake and sky into bedrooms, bathrooms, and living spaces alike. Built-in daybeds, seating, and storage — especially at the porch — blur the line between architecture and furniture, making every square foot earn its place. The resulting aesthetic is spare and unpretentious, but quietly precise: a humble structure elevated through careful attention.
