MAUI ACADEMY OF PERFORMING ARTS BLACK BOX THEATER & MASTERPLAN

Serving as the inaugural phase of a comprehensive performing arts campus in downtown Wailuku, Hawaii, the Naylor Black Box Theater establishes a vital cultural anchor for the Maui Academy of Performing Arts. Responding to challenging economic constraints and complex community needs following the 2020 pandemic and 2023 wildfires, the architectural intervention required a highly distilled and adaptable methodology.

The resulting structure integrates educational and performance programming under one roof. A fully equipped black box theater is supported by dance and rehearsal studios, a student lounge, and flexible ancillary spaces. By prioritizing multi-use scenarios, the spatial organization allows for seamless transitions throughout the day, maximizing civic engagement and programmatic flexibility.
